Barbara Elliott, holding a copy, and Nellie Sleppy were calling folks who had pre-ordered the book to invite them to come pick up their copy at the Historical Museum. Copies will be available for $35 at the Street Fair office and at the Historical Society’s booth in the Industrial Tent during the fair. While Bluffton Utilities workers were making final adjustments to the street banners on Market Street Friday afternoon (bottom photo), volunteers were bagging copies of the Fair's Official Program at the Street Fair office, all in preparation for the Tuesday launch of the 100th edition of the Bluffton Street Fair. The programs will be available for sale at several locations during the fair, including the Kiwanis Information Booth and in the Industrial Tent. The fair will get it's official launch with brief opening ceremonies prior to the Opening Night Parade at 7 p.m. Working Friday afternoon with the programs were, from left, fair chairperson Rhonda Ryan, along with Janet DeWitt and Carol Yoder.

The winners of the 2010 Best Seats in Town bench decorating contest were announced Friday afternoon.

Next week all the benches will be placed around downtown and everyone is welcome to have a seat. These seats are used every year by the Bluffton Street Fair, only this year for the 100th anniversary they have been decorated!

STREET FAIR TRADITION CONTINUES WITH 4-H PANCAKE BOOTH

As the Bluffton Street Fair celebrates its 100th anniversary, it has many other traditions that go along with it.

One of those traditions is the 4-H Pancake & Sausage Booth located on Market Street
just northwest of the courthouse.

In fact, 2010 will be the 61st year for the 4-H Pancake & Sausage Booth. However, 4-H has an even longer history with the Street Fair. 4-H youth in Wells County first began exhibiting canned goods, corn and livestock at the 1923 Street Fair and continued until 1949.

In 1950 4-H switched to a summer fair in order to give youth an opportunity to exhibit at the State Fair which was held in late August.

Through the 61 years, the menu has not changed much. The volunteers still cook up some great buttermilk pancakes, whole hog sausage and ham. In addition, the booth serves grilled cheese sandwiches, sausage sandwiches and new this year will be a pork burger.

Volunteers all across the county help with the booth. This yearís shift chair people include: Lancaster, Rob & Jenni Hoover; Harrison, Janet Ramseyer; Liberty, Leah Sills; Chester, Aimee & Doug Paxson; PATRIOTS 4-H Club, Cindy Mossburg; Jefferson, Cindy Meyer and Ronda Flesch; Jackson, Kelly Jones; Nottingham, Shari Hook; Rockcreek / Union, Julie Smith; and Horse & Pony Club, Ray Carroll and Mary Nolan.

Anyone interested in volunteering with the booth should contact the Wells County Extension Office, 824-6412.

This yearís booth features new canvas sides and a new arching roof along with a fresh coat of paint to match.

The booth will open each morning (Wednesday ñ Saturday) at 7 AM and continue throughout the day and evening.

The purpose of the 4-H booth also has not changed through the years. The profit from the booth helps to support the 4-H program with the purchase of ribbons for the fair and sending youth on educational 4-H trips along with assisting with 4-H Park upkeep.

Many people make a traditional stop at the Pancake Booth sometime during the fair to enjoy food and to watch the volunteers turn out those pancakes and sausage.

So enjoy the 100th anniversary and help 4-H celebrate 61 plus years of being at the Street Fair.

Veterans wanted for Bluffton Street Fair Parade

Ralph Garcia is looking for a few good men and women — not to serve their country. He’s looking for the ones who have already served.
Garcia is heading up an effort to get Vietnam-era veterans to join him in the opening night parade for the Bluffton Street Fair. There is an effort to get living veterans from all eras to be a part of the parade; however, as of now, Garcia has only one other individual to march with him.
The search for Vietnam veterans for the Street Fair is connected to the decade-by-decade theme of the fair’s opening night parade. Parade chairman Melanie Durr says that World War II veterans are needed for the 1940s and Korean War veterans are needed for the 1950s.
“We really need those veterans,” Durr said Tuesday.
Garcia’s focus is the Vietnam veterans, who will be included in the 1960s.
Vietnam-era veterans are defined as those who served between January of 1959 and May of 1975. Garcia wants anyone who served during that era to contact him to enlarge their ranks.
Whether their service was Stateside or in Vietnam (referred to as being “in country”), or anywhere else, does not matter. It’s the dates of service that matter.
“Any Vietnam-era veteran is eligible,” Garcia said. “Being an in-country veteran is not necessary.”
Garcia is the founder of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 698 in Bluffton. He says the membership of the local chapter is a little busy next Tuesday night, which means members can’t join the veterans’ group. Bob Frantz, for instance, is the Wells County sheriff; Jim Van Winkle is a member of County Council; Carl Perry is a member of the Bluffton Common Council.
“Many of our guys are already wrapped up in stuff,” Garcia said. “Right now, we have just me and another guy.”
Vietnam veterans came home to a country tired of the conflict, and as a group they were not honored for their service to the nation. This is another chance to rectify that oversight — if the veterans are there, Garcia said.
“This may be the first time they get some recognition for their Vietnam service,” he said. “I want to tell you — I’ve been a part of that, honored for my service, and it feels good.”

Winners of ‘best seats in town’ to be named Sept. 17

Bluffton Mayor Ted Ellis will announce entries and winners in the Creative Arts Council’s 10th Outdoor Art Showcase on the terrace of the Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre, 211 Water St., Bluffton at noon on Friday, Sept. 17.
This year, the showcase is titled “Best Seats in Town.” Thirty-two area businesses and organizations have sponsored artists who designed and painted benches for seating at the 100th Bluffton Free Street Fair.
Entries will be judged by members of the Fort Wayne Artists Guild for award certificates for Best of Show, First, Second and Third places and a Youth Award.
All bench entries will receive an exhibitor ribbon and can be viewed by the public free of charge all day Friday, Sept. 17 at the AC & VC. During the fair (Tuesday, Sept.. 21 to Saturday, Sept. 25) the benches will provide seating for fair attenders.

Heritage Quilt Show now at AC&VC gallery

Forty-one quilted items dating from 1885 to 2010 are now on exhibit at the Heritage Quilt Show at the Balentine Gallery at the Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre in Bluffton.

The show is part of the Bluffton Free Street Fair’s 100th anniversary celebration and will be viewable through Sept. 28th during regular building hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and during extended hours during the fair.

Those having items in the show are Betty Johnloz, Carol Riley, Jane Griner, Sue Harris, Kris Decker, Jean Lemler, Susan Lesh, Carol Stern, Marlene Risser, Anita Haddix, Karen Rydman, Chris Williams, Carmie Anderson, Phyllis Genth, Carol Malone and Connie Frauhiger, all members of the Bee Happy Quilters group.

Others hang quilts in the exhibit are Heather Meisch, Merlie Ann Thinnes, Becky Ringger, Susan Schultz, Patty Makowski, Lena Knowles and Kathy Fritts.

Quilt club members and CAC Friends will be staffing the gallery during the fair when the hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 21-22) and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Sept. 23-25). The gallery will be closed on Monday, Sept. 20.

The Wells County Agricultural Exhibits for the Bluffton Free Street Fair will again be held at the City Building, it was announced this week by Street Fair officials
Brochures and entry forms are now available at the Street Fair office located at 113 S. Johnson Street, which is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is 824-4351.
“Exhibits must be grown or made in Wells County and exhibitor must be Wells County resident,” a spokesperson for the fair emphasized.
The entries for Culinary & Needlework and Fine Arts & Crafts are to be delivered between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20. Judging for these categories is at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21. Entries for Agricultural and Flowers are to be delivered between 8 a.m. and noon on Tuesday. Judging for these categories is Tuesday afternoon with exhibits open for viewing from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
Entries are not to be removed before 4 p.m. but must be out of the Exhibit Hall by 8 p.m. on Friday. The Street Fair Association cannot be responsible for any entries not removed by that time, they noted.
The Wells County Democratic Party will be providing the security services during open viewing hours once again. Chairmen for these exhibits are Carol Meeks (Culinary, Needlework, Fine Arts & Crafts), Helen Witte (Flowers) and Bill Horan (Agriculture).
Any exhibitor with a large number of entries may bring their entry forms to the Street Fair office by Thursday, Sept. 16, for the office staff to pre-register them, which will speed up the process of registering at the City Building. Premium checks may be picked up Monday through Wednesday the week following the fair at the Street Fair office.

Big Changes for Street Fair Horse Show

The 100th year of the Bluffton Street Fair will bring big changes to the saddle horse exhibit at the fair.
Starting on Saturday, Sept. 18, the horses will begin showing halter and pleasure classes at 9 a.m.
A chili supper carry-in will be held Saturday evening for the participants. Past saddle horse fair participants are encouraged to join for fellowship and sharing of street fair memories.
The show will continue on Sunday with obstacle courses and contesting classes starting at 3 p.m.
Fun show classes will be held on the evenings as in the past, but with a rearranged schedule.
At 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening, Sept. 20, the young riders age 9 and under will participate in the Little Buckaroo Show. Riders 10 to 18 can participate in the Casey Biberstine Memorial Show on Wednesday evening starting at 6:30 p.m.
On Thursday, the final day of events will feature riders 19 and over in the Goodtime Charlie Show. The show will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a break for the awards presentation at 7:30 p.m.
There are a wide variety of classes offered for exhibitors and their horses, ranging from miniature horses to draft horses, mules and donkeys, driving, and timed events.
The saddle horses will be located at the 4-H Park from Saturday, Sept. 18 through Thursday, Sept. 23. As always, the public is invited to stop out at the park to watch the show and view the horses.

More sponsors needed for Street Fair benches

There is still time to purchase the rights to decorate a Bluffton Street Fair bench for $200 and have it completed in time for use at fair time.
The benches, owned by the Fair Association, will be used at this anniversary fair and continue to be used for years to come. Each bench will have a plaque on it telling the name of the sponsor and the artist. Sponsorship of a bench is $200 with $100 of it to go to the artist.

Jerry Christianson, Bluffton Street Fair manager and organizer of the Interurban passenger car replica that is being built for the upcoming 100th edition of the fair, gathered several men who have made key contributions to the effort. As promised, there will be a number of special souvenirs to mark the 100th Bluffton Street Fair this year, one of which is available now.
The Bluffton High School Class of 1968 has produced a commemorative insulated “Tervis Tumbler” with the street fair’s 100th logo embroidered and encased in the tumbler’s side. The tumblers are selling for $15 a piece, with all proceeds to benefit the two Wells County Dollars for Scholars programs.
The idea was hatched on a beach in Venice, Fla., according to Elanda Poff, one of the organizers. She credits class member Glenn Talbert for the original concept.
Poff also noted that the tumblers, which “keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold,” comes with a lifetime guarantee.
The class has rented space to sell the tumblers during the fair at the former Pathway Bouquet building at the corner of Market and Johnson Streets. Tumblers may be obtained prior to the sale “while they last” the class members note, by contacting Norm Kain at 824-5914 or Dave Poff at 824-0872.
Kain said that the class would welcome other classes or groups to help them distribute and sell the tumblers. “And we want to make sure everyone understand this will benefit both the Bluffton-Southern Wells and the Norwell Dollars for Scholars programs,” he added.
Persons or groups interested in helping to sell the tumblers can also contact either Kain or Poff.
The organizers also hope the space they will rent during the fair will be a place their classmates can gather while visiting the fair.
“It’s been a fun thing for us and we want to help out the scholarship programs,” Poff noted.
Street fair president Jon Brown expressed his appreciation to the class and is hopeful other groups will come up with similar efforts. “We like the idea that the scholarship program will benefit from the fair’s anniversary,” Brown said. “This is what it’s all about.”

Replica Interurban planned for Bluffton Street Fair

This volunteer crew of workers is putting together a replica of the Interurban cars that ran between Bluffton and Fort Wayne a century ago. They are standing in front of the metal framework as they begin their project. The project will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Interurban accident in Kingsland that killed 41 people on Sept. 21, 1910. The 100th Bluffton Street Fair's Opening Night is Sept. 21, 2010. Horse and Pony Show Award Winners

The Horse and Pony Show during the Bluffton Street fair is a great time to visit with some wonderful folks down at the Wells County 4-H Fairgrounds. They have some well-trained and exquisite animals on display and don't mind answering a few questions about them.

This is Paul Schweiterman, winner of the "Good Time Charlie Award". This is presented to an adult that loves to have a good time and is not afraid to show it.

This is Mackenzie Toliver, winner of the "Little Buckaroo Award". This is presented to the best Little Cowboy or Cowgirl under the age of 10 that has an animal stalled at the fair.

This is Aubrey Kobryn, winner of the "Casey Biberstine Memorial Award". This is presented to the boy or girl between the ages of 10 - 18 who has an animal stalled at the fair that displays the same fun-loving attitude that Casey always had.

At times the rain came down like a tsunami, but the couple hundred folks that gathered for the Bluffton Street Fair Idol contest were perfectly content watching the show, despite the rain.
I can't wait for next year...hopefully the weather will be a little dryer.
